Meet our Team

This project is a collaboration between academics from Manchester Metropolitan University (UK), University of Cambridge (UK), Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies (Vietnam), and An Giang University (Vietnam).

The project brings together an international team of experienced teacher educators, researchers, and institutional partners committed to advancing teacher professional development through collaborative, identity-oriented approaches. The team has a track record for successfully designing and delivering impactful international and national research and teacher development projects.

Coordination Team

The Coordination Team provides strategic direction, coordination, and evaluation of the project across all stages, ensuring coherence, quality, and impact.

Dr. Mai Nguyễn

Manchester Metropolitan University, UK

Mai Nguyễn is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. She has more than 15 years of experience as a language teacher, teacher educator, and language education researcher. Her research work critically explores the interplay between teacher identity, pedagogy, research engagement, and professional learning across diverse pedagogical, technological, and policy landscapes. She is passionate about supporting language teachers in their professional development, and has worked pre- and in-service second language teachers in diverse context, including Vietnam, Australia, and the UK.Mai is the project lead, providing overall strategic direction and coordination across the planning, delivery, and evaluation of project activities in both stages. She also serves as a TAG facilitator, directly supporting teacher learning and development within the programme.

Dr. Huy Nguyễn

Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Vietnam

Huy Nguyễn is an Associate Professor in Applied Linguistics and TESOL in the Department of English, Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies. He is also the University’s Vice Rector. He earned his Ph.D. in Language Education from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. His main research interests are in the area of language planning and policy (LPP), with a special focus on language-in-education policy, globalisation in foreign language education, and educational leadership in developing countries. He has had over 20 years of experience in teaching English and training pre- and in-service English language teachers in Vietnam. Huy leads the institutional delivery of the project at Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, overseeing its implementation and ensuring alignment with university priorities and local and national teacher development goals.

Richard Silburn

Manchester Metropolitan University, UK

Richard Silburn is the Director of the Language Centre at Manchester Metropolitan University. Prior to joining Manchester Met, he was the Head of the Centre for English Language Education at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. He has been teaching English for over 15 years and has taught in Japan, Greece, Austria, and China as well as the UK. His main areas of expertise are English for Academic Purposes, English for Specific Purposes, academic management, and teacher training. He has led on a range of teacher training projects with teachers from a wide variety of backgrounds. He has extensive experience working with English language teachers in China. Richard provides strategic leadership for the project at Manchester Metropolitan University, managing its institutional coordination and effective delivery.

Dr. Phan Thị Thanh Huyền

An Giang University, Vietnam

Dr. Phan Thị Thanh Huyền, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Language, An Giang University (AGU), Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, has worked as a lecturer and teacher trainer in English language education for more than 20 years. Her research interests include learner autonomy, language policy and planning, TESOL, and agency enactment. She is also interested in cross-cultural communication and has involved in various exchange programs to promote mutual understanding between various groups of people, institutions and countries. Huyền provides strategic leadership for the project at An Giang University, ensuring its effective implementation and alignment with institutional, national, and local priorities. She also serves as a TAG facilitator, contributing directly to teacher development within the programme.

Quang Nguyễn

Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Vietnam

Quang Nguyễn works at the Office of Language Testing and Assesment at Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies. Within the project, he plays a key role in coordinating teacher recruitment and providing administrative and operational support for TAG teachers in Hue. He also contributes to the collection and analysis of project data, supporting the research and evaluation strand of the programme.

Nhi Nguyễn

Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Vietnam

Nhi Nguyễn is an experienced Officer in International Cooperation at Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies. She holds a Master’s degree in Education Science and has extensive experience in managing international academic partnerships. Her work involves supporting student and staff mobility programs, organising international events, and maintaining institutional collaborations. With strong organisational and intercultural communication skills, she is committed to enhancing global engagement and contributing to the university’s internationalisation strategy. As a member of the TAG project coordination team, Nhi plays a key role in supporting project implementation. including overseeing administrative procedures, facilitating communication among stakeholders, and managing project-related documentation.

Design Team

The Design Team contributes to the development of the TET model and the TAG Facilitator Programme, including the design of facilitator development sessions and programme structure.

Dr. Anthony Picot (Tony)

Manchester Metropolitan University, UK

Tony Picot is a Senior Lecturer in TESOL at Manchester Metropolitan University, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics, a Trinity TESOL Cert, a Diploma in ELT and a MEd in ELT and Ed Tech. He has worked with all levels and ages and taught and trained teachers in Germany, Thailand, Japan and UK. He has taught General English, Business English, EAP and ESP. From 1997, he worked in a language school in South Thailand and became a Cambridge Examiner before becoming the Head of English at an International School there. He moved to a university in Japan for two years where he led the Internet Research Project. He now works at Manchester Metropolitan University as the Course Director on the Trinity TESOL Certificate (undergraduate) course and as Programme Leader for the MA TESOL and Applied Linguistics.Tony plays a central role in shaping the TAG Facilitator Programme, co-designing its structure and content, and contributing significantly to its delivery as a TAG facilitator to support teacher development and leadership.

Caroline Collier

Manchester Metropolitan University, UK

Caroline Collier is a Senior Lecturer in TESOL, International Lead and Course Coordinator at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. A DELTA qualified, Trinity Cert TESOL trainer with an MA in TESOL and Applied Linguistics, she has experience of training EFL teachers in areas such as task based language teaching, assessment, teaching young learners and curriculum development. Caroline teaches undergraduate and postgraduate TESOL students as well being the academic lead for international study tours of English language learners.Caroline co-leads the design and development of the TAG facilitator Programme and contributes significantly to its delivery as a TAG facilitator, supporting teacher learning and leadership across the project.

Dr. Carmen Herrero

Manchester Metropolitan University, UK

Carmen Herrero is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Hispanic Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is the co-founder and co-director of the Film in Language Teaching Association (FILTA), a professional association of language teachers, film educators, and researchers. FILTA provides a forum for the exchange of information and materials related to the use of film in language teaching. Her research focuses on film, screen, and transmedia studies, and their pedagogical applications to innovative approaches in language learning and teaching. She has co-edited four books in this interdisciplinary field, including Teaching Languages with Screen Media: Pedagogical Reflections (2023) and Rethinking Multimodal Literacy in Theory and Practice (2023).Carmen co-leads the design and development of the TAG Facilitator Programme and contributes significantly to its delivery as a TAG facilitator, bringing her expertise in innovative, media-informed approaches to support language teacher learning and community leadership.

Dr. Phan Quỳnh Như

Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Vietnam

Phan Quỳnh Như is a Senior Lecturer at University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Hue University. She has extensive experience in teaching English as a foreign language, and training pre-service and in-service teachers for more than twenty years. As a teacher trainer, Nhu has designed and delivered training courses and materials on English language teaching methodology and teacher professional development to teachers in various settings. Her ongoing research interests have been in the areas of teaching English as a foreign language, teacher education, and development in innovative and collaborative modes. Như co-leads the design and development of the TAG Facilitator Programme and contributes significantly to its delivery as a TAG facilitator, directly supporting teacher learning and professional development.

Dr. Phương Trần

Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Vietnam

Phưưng Trần is a lecturer in TEFL and Applied Linguistics at the English Department, Hue University of Foreign Languages. Over the past 13 years, she has taught a wide range of courses in English language skills, Translation skills, Intercultural Communication, and English Teaching Methodologies at the university level. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in Applied Linguistics from the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and the School of Language and Culture at The University of Queensland in early 2020. Her areas of research and supervisory expertise include teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), clinical pragmatics, Technology and translation, and cross-cultural communication.Phương co-leds the design and development of the TAG Facilitator Programme and contributes significantly to its delivery as a TAG facilitator, directly supporting teacher learning and professional development.

Dr. Trang Lê Diễm Bùi

An Giang University, Vietnam

Trang Lê Diễm Bùi is an Associate Professor in Applied Linguistics and TESOL at the Faculty of Foreign Language, An Giang University (AGU), Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City. She has worked in English language teaching and language teacher education for more than twenty years. She has a doctorate from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Her research centers on task-based language teaching, young learner engagement, second language pedagogy, and language teacher education.Trang co-leads the design and development of the TAG Facilitator Programme, co-designs its structure and content, and significantly contributes to its delivery as a TAG facilitator to enhance teacher learning and development.

Huỳnh Trường Sang

An Giang University, Vietnam

Huỳnh Trường Sang is currently a PhD candidate in TESOL, and working as an early-career teacher educator at An Giang University, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. His research interests involve English teaching methodology, and teacher identity and emotions.Sang co-designs the TAG Facilitator Programme and contributes significantly to its delivery as a TAG facilitator, directly supporting teacher learning and development.

Monitoring & Evaluation Team

The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Team plays a key role in ensuring the quality, coherence, and impact of the project. The team supports systematic data collection, analysis, and interpretation across all stages of implementation to generate evidence on teacher learning, programme processes, and outcomes.

Dr. Phụng Đào

University of Cambridge, UK

Phụng Đào is an Associate Professor in Second Language Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge, where he teaches MPhil/MEd courses in Research in Second Language Education (RSLE) and supervises PhD students. His research interests focus on instructed second language acquisition (ISLA), technology for language teaching and learning, learner engagement, Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), L2 pedagogy, and L2 teacher education. His publications appear in international peer-reviewed Applied Linguistics journals such as Modern Language Journal, TESOL Quarterly, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Language Teaching, Computer Assisted Language Learning, Language Teaching Research, Applied Linguistics Review, TESOL Journal, System, Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching, Language Learning Journal, IRAL, among others.Phung leads the research and evaluation strand of the project, in which he shapes the design and implementation of large-scale surveys and interviews to generate evidence on teacher development and the impact of the project.

Dr. Marijana Macis

Manchester Metropolitan University, UK

Marijana Macis is a Senior Lecturer in TESOL and Applied Linguistics at Manchester Metropolitan University. She completed her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics at the University of Nottingham, UK. Her research focuses on all aspects of teaching and learning of vocabulary in a second language. Her research has been published in numerous high-quality journals. Marijana has over 20 years of experience in teaching English and Applied Linguistics and TESOL courses across different contexts, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, and the UK. She also has vast experience in training and supporting teachers in pre- and in-service teacher development programs.Marijana plays a key role in the design and development of the project’s research instruments, shaping survey and interview tools to capture teachers’ learning and experiences. She also leads professional learning as a TAG facilitator and directly supports teacher development on the programme.

Sương Hoàng

Manchester Adult Education Service, Manchester City Council, UK

Sương Hoàng is an ESOL tutor at Manchester Adult Education Service, Manchester City Council, and she really enjoys helping local residents improve their English language knowledge and skills. With more than 10 years of experience in ELT, Suong is working towards being a teacher mentor and a reflective practitioner. In her free time, she loves spending time with her friends and family, nature, books, bouldering, and running. Sương plays a key role as a TAG facilitator and coordinates the TAG assistant team, significantly supporting both teacher development and the effective delivery of the programme. She also contributes to the content of the project website.

Nguyễn Thị Hồng Hà

Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Vietnam

Nguyễn Thị Hồng Hà is a lecturer in the Department of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) at the University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Hue University, Vietnam. She teaches General English to non-English major students in the ESP Department and English-major students in the Department of English.Her research interests include Professional Development, Extensive Reading, and Corpus Linguistics. She frequently presents at international conferences such as VietTESOL and the Warwick International Conference in Applied Linguistics.In 2019, she was a finalist for the A.S. Hornby Trust scholarship and later pursued an MA in TESOL at the University of Warwick (2021–2022).Within the project, Hà plays a dual role as a TAG facilitator, where she directly supports teacher learning and development, and as a member of the research team, where she contributes to the design and analysis of survey and interview data to inform teacher development and programme impact.

Dr. Chi Đô Na

An Giang University, Vietnam

Chi Đô Na is currently an Instructor at UQ College, University of Queensland, Australia, and a lecturer of English at An Giang University, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He was a member of several projects supporting English as an additional language (EAL) teachers. He is passionate about teacher education and supporting English language learners, especially international students. He is interested in exploring English language teacher and learner identity, second language writing, language and culture, and transnational education.Na contributes to the design of survey and interview instruments, significantly supporting the development of robust tools to capture teachers’ experiences and learning.

Anjitha Sajeev

Manchester Metropolitan University, Vietnam

Anjitha Sajeev has a Bachelor's in English (Literature, Communication, and Journalism), a Master's in English language and literature from India, and a Master's in Applied Linguistics from Manchester Metropolitan University. As a dedicated educator with over three years of experience teaching English as a second language, she has also earned a Trinity College London Certificate in TESOL in 2024, which helped to transform her teaching methodologies and approaches towards language teaching. She worked as a Lecturer/Assistant professor of English back in India, where she taught English literature and language lessons to undergraduate students. She has also gained experience in preparing students for their IELTS examination, where she created personalised lesson plans tailored to individual learning styles and goals.Anjitha contributes significantly to the project’s implementation by supporting TAG sessions administratively and technologically, working closely with TAG facilitators and teachers before and after sessions, and assisting with data collection and evaluation processes.

Nguyễn Thị Minh Hạnh

An Giang University, Vietnam

Nguyễn Thị Minh Hạnh graduated from An Giang University and now works as a research assistant, English teacher, and manager at an English centre. During her gap year in 2023, she lived in a convent and volunteered as a teacher, an experience that reshaped her teaching philosophy and strengthened her commitment to ethics, persistence, and flexibility.She has a strong interest in research and believes that any scientific contributions with ‘true’ results and sufficient efforts can lead to long-lasting values contributing to the advancement of the educational system. Beyond her academic work, Hanh is interested in art and literature.Hạnh contributes significantly to the project’s implementation by supporting TAG sessions administratively and technologically, working closely with TAG facilitators and teachers before and after sessions, and assisting with data collection and evaluation processes. She also coordinates the teacher recruitment process in Stage 2 of the project and writes content for the project website.

Châu Nguyễn

Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Vietnam

Châu Nguyễn recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree in English Pedagogy from Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies. She is now a full-time IELTS teacher in an English center where I had 3.5 years being a part-time teaching assistant previously. Besides delivering lessons, she is responsible for preparing lesson plans, collaborating with other teachers in supporting learners individually on their way achieving their targeted band score. She is also a part-time researcher in the field of Language teaching and learning.Châu contributes significantly to the project’s implementation by supporting TAG sessions administratively and technologically, working closely with TAG facilitators and teachers before and after sessions, and assisting with data collection and evaluation processes.

Quốc Thạch Nguyễn

Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Vietnam

Quốc Thạch Nguyễn is a Lecturer at Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, where he completed both his bachelor's and master's degrees. In addition to three years of experience in teaching English as a foreign language, he has also had the opportunity to engage in and conduct several research projects. His research interests include teacher education and professional learning, especially reflective teaching. Outside of work, he enjoys reading and exploring literary works.Thạch contributes significantly to the project’s implementation by supporting TAG sessions administratively and technologically, working closely with TAG facilitators and teachers before and after sessions, and assisting with data collection and evaluation processes.

Phạm Trần Hoài An

Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Vietnam

Phạm Trần Hoài An is a CELTA-certified EFL teacher with over four years of experience working with underprivileged students and students with special needs in Vietnam and Tanzania. She graduated from University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Hue University, in 2025 with a Bachelor’s degree in English Language Teaching. Her research interests revolve around access to quality education in particular and educational equality in general. She is also committed to improving instructional approaches for teachers in various educational settings.An contributes significantly to the project’s implementation by supporting TAG sessions administratively and technologically, working closely with TAG facilitators and teachers before and after sessions, and assisting with data collection and evaluation processes.

Nguyễn Đắc Nhật Hảo

Hue University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, Vietnam

Nguyễn Đắc Nhật Hảo has been teaching English for the past few years. Seeing her students grow, gain confidence, and improve their skills has made teaching incredibly fulfilling for her. She has worked with learners of different ages, and each lesson is a chance to connect, inspire, and make a real difference in their learning. Beyond teaching, her experience in translation, proofreading, and secondary education has broadened her perspective on language and communication. Outside of work, she enjoys watching films and learning new languages. Teaching has become her passion, and she is always excited to learn and grow with her students.Hảo contributes significantly to the project’s implementation by supporting TAG sessions administratively and technologically, working closely with TAG facilitators and teachers before and after sessions, and assisting with data collection and evaluation processes. She also writes content for the project website.

Ngô Lợi Lợi

An Giang University, Vietnam

Ngô Lợi Lợi is a Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Foreign Languages at An Giang University. With two years of experience at An Giang University, she has focused on supporting the development of students’ core language skills and helping them use English in authentic contexts, while fostering a dynamic, engaging, and enjoyable classroom environment that builds confidence for international communication.Beyond her academic role, she has actively engaged in leadership, international exchange, and community-oriented educational activities. She successfully completed the YSEALI programme in 2018, studying Natural Resources in Montana, an experience that broadened her global perspective and strengthened her commitment to education and intercultural learning. She has also gained valuable teaching experience through her work at the faculty and over six years at Small World Language Center. In addition, she serves as the Club President of the AGU English Speaking Club – Youths for APEC 2027, where she creates meaningful opportunities for students to practise English, build confidence, and develop their communication skills through extracurricular activities and collaborative learning.Within the project, Lợi significantly supports TAG sessions administratively and technologically, works closely with TAG facilitators and teachers before and after sessions, and assists with data collection and evaluation processes. She also plays a key role in managing project-related documentation at An Giang University.
